Goal & Policy

AUO has defined policies and guidelines for the Company’s governance, environmental and social dimensions. Medium to long-term goals have been set since 2008 for the promotion of environmental policies and initiatives. AUO has now proposed Carbon 2020, Water 2020 and environmental impact reduction targets for 2020.

 

Carbon 2020 Target

By 2020, AUO expects to reduce 1 million tons of carbon emissions. This is implemented through all stages of product lifecycle, from material selection, localized purchase, 4R materials management strategy (4R: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replacement), green production, green transportation, to the use of energy-efficient panels.

Water 2020 Target

AUO has pledged to achieve the three major water resource goals of “Water Reduction, Water Creation, and Water Replenishment” by 2020. The target for “Water Reduction” is to reduce water use intensity by 30% through the development of more advanced process technologies and improvements to the efficiency of water treatment equipment; the target for “Water Creation” is to recycle 10,000 tons of water per day at the Taichung site, greatly improving the Company’s water independence while supporting national water resource policy; the target for “Water Replenishment” is to take Lungtan site’s full recycling of processed water to a new level. This will be achieved through internal reductions, as well as supporting the supply chain with water-saving technologies and services, to effectively reduce water consumption Within the supply chain, aiming to become the first water neutral enterprise in Taiwan.

Environmental Footprint

AUO has many years of experience with green manufacturing and knows that there is a limit to environmental carrying capacity. It is therefore essential to avoid excessive energy and resource consumption and to take environmental footprint into consideration during development. We have therefore set a target of reducing our environmental footprint in 2020 by 8% compared to 2014. The introduction of the circular economy-based technology will reduce the environmental footprint from air pollution, water pollution and waste. Initiatives such as source reduction and chemical substitution also significantly reduce manufacturing costs.

Sustainability Policy and Guidelines

The corporate sustainability policy of AUO was developed with reference to the relevant international standards including Social Accountability Standard (SA8000), the Universal Declarations of Human Rights, the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) and the Global Sullivan Principles. The AUO Sustainability Policy was approved by the Board of Directors and took effect in 2015. The 12-item policy encompassing the three main aspects of corporate governance, environment and society, defines the spirit and highest guiding principles of sustainable development for AUO. The Corporate Social Responsibility Principles were approved by the Board of Directors, defining the principles and areas of interest and guidelines for the realization of sustainable development by the Company.

 

Corporate Governance Policy and Principles

AUO has defined polices for enterprise integrity, anti-trust, taxation, quality, and conflict minerals. These take the form of the Articles of Incorporation, Ethical Corporate Management Principles, Corporate Governance Principles, Code of Ethical Conduct for Directors and Senior Management as well as the Board of Directors Self-Assessment of Performance. Corporate governance procedures and rules are now fully documented through the Rules for the Election of Directors, AUO Rules and Procedures for Shareholders Meeting, Organic Charter of the Audit Committee, Organic Charter of the Remuneration Committee, Regulations for Prevention of Insider Trading, Handling Procedures for Providing Endorsements and Guarantees for Third Parties, Handling Procedures for Acquisition or Disposition of Assets, Handling Procedures for Capital Lending, Handling Procedures for Conducting Derivative Transactions, as well as Policy and Procedures for Complaints and Concerns Regarding Accounting, Internal Accounting.

 

 

Environmental Policy and Guidelines

AUO environmental safety & health (ESH) and energy policies are based on expectations of overall ESH and energy performance. Company business philosophy, outcomes of environmental assessments, statutory requirements, resource requirements, pollution prevention and stakeholders are also taken into account. The supply chain is required to adhere to the rules on hazardous substances as well.

 

Human Rights Policy

AUO complies with the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Convention, International Labor certification, Global Sullivan Principles, Ruggie Framework, Electronic Industry Code of Conduct (EICC) and the “Labor Standards Act” in Taiwan to develop human rights policy and corresponding Table of Human Right Risk Structure, ensuring the rights of employees at the policy and execution level.

 

At the policy level, AUO has defined internal regulations such as the “Employee Manual”, “Work Rules”, “Sexual Harassment Prevention” and “Recruitment Management.” Protections for employee rights in terms of age, work hours, attendance and gender are explicitly defined to ensure employees are properly looked after.

 

At the execution level, a variety of measures are used by AUO to ensure freedom of employment, humane treatment, non-discrimination, and non-use of child labor, and create corporate environment that respects, cares about and protects human rights.

 

To promote labor rights and full communication between the company and employees, AUO has set up clearly defined internal channels for employee feedback, complaints or suggestions such as the “Employee Feedback Box”, “President Mailbox”, “Audit Committee Mailbox”, “Sexual Harassment Complaints Mailbox”, and “Employee Suggestion Hotline.” The strictest privacy protection measures are used to ensure the independence and confidentiality of employee submissions. Monthly meetings, quarterly meetings, labor-management meetings and employee welfare committee meetings are also convened on a regular basis to ensure unobstructed communication, protect workers’ freedom of association and collective bargaining rights, and promote healthy, positive labor-management relations.

 

An AUO Supplier/Subcontract Code of Conduct has been formulated as well to expand our CSR influence to AUO suppliers.

AUO insists on providing high quality green products to customers globally as well as establishing long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships with clients. AUO constantly strives to enhance and advance existing technologies to maintain global leadership, develop cost-effective products, seek constant improvements, and create mutually beneficial win-wins with customers.
